The Shadow Lords' Castle
In
the heart of the Dark Place squats a hulking fortress of stone, the Shadow
Lords' Castle. It is the center of power from which the Shadow Lords hold
the entirety of the Dark Place within their cruel grip. Surrounded by
jagged cliffs and circled by a high stone wall, the castle is both an
impenetrable fortress and an inescapable prison. Inside it is divided
into four wings surrounding a central area. Each wing corresponds to one
of the cardinal directions and is ruled with absolute authority by the
Shadow Lord who lives there. The Shadow Lords themselves constantly struggle
against one another each trying to gain power over the others, as is their
nature, but even so they do cooperate against their mutual enemies; the
Elementals and the Nameless
One. The atmosphere of the castle is that of a nation in the midst
of a near-constant power struggle. The balance of power can shift from
moment to moment as alliances are formed and crumble, and yesterday's
supporters can become today's jailors. It is a dangerous and anxious place
to live.
